Log 1

Hello, my name is Peggy! I am a second year AFL student in NTUST. I decided to take this course simply because this is a required course, but I do regard myself as a reader and writer since both reading and writing are essential skills for AFL students. I seldom read, but I do it when I find something that I am really interested in, and most of the books that I am interested in are written in Chinese Mandarin. The English books I have read (and still remember the title of the books) are Magic Tree House by Salvatore Murdocca, and Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. I like writing a little bit more than reading. When I write, I am like digging into my mind, and discovering the thoughts that I didn't thoroughly think about. I also see writing as a way of letting others to know me, because I am not so good at speaking with words or sentences that are well-organized in a short time. In brief, I consider myself to be a reader and writer.

As for my hobby and interest, I only have few things that I can talk about. When I was still a freshman, I was really into sleeping. No matter an in-class nap, noon sleep, afternoon sleep, or night sleep. I used to rest a lot, and I found it satisfying. However, I haven't had a satisfying sleep since last week. Chances are that I already quitted the hobby, which makes me feel sad on occasion. I like any forms of English that are pleasant to hear. For example, movies, music, stand-up comedies, and podcasts. The movie series that I enjoyed a lot was the Twilight series, and I had had watched the whole series for four or five times. Any genre of English songs is good to me, except for rock music. Moreover, I watch short videos of English stand-up comedies online sometimes, but I don't have interest in a particular comedian. For podcasts, I listened to Before Breakfast and 30-day TOEIC Vocabulary when I was in senior high school. To conclude, I like to rest, and I think I like to be surrounded by English.

As I mentioned above, I take this course simply because this is a required course. After listening to the introduction of the syllabus, I think I will gain skills about reading and writing, group working, and video making. Though this course seems to be challenging, I hope I can do my best.

  1. Hi Peggy!
Welcome to this required course. It will be demanding, but hopefully also enriching.
I wonder if you have ever read a book in English out of your own interest. Or maybe in any other language.

What kind of genre or type of text do you like to read in Mandarin Chinese?
I like to read adaptations for learners of Chinese of the book 三國演義 (Did you know that it's called "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" in English? Kinda weird because it's not about love!) I like books that include historial elements. :)
