In the latter half of this book, I feel it is the most climactic part. This chapter mainly focuses on how the mysterious disappearance of Fang’s couple leads Annie and Buster to gradually awaken as they search for the truth.
What touched me the most is that, under normal conditions, if a family member goes missing, the other members would be very anxious and immediately seek help from the police. However, when the Fang‘a couple disappeared, Annie and Buster wondered if their parents were really missing or if this was just another performance art piece planned by them. I completely understand why they would have such thoughts, as it reflects how deeply Fang’s couple past actions have impacted them.
I have seen similar plots on TV before, where, like the Fang family, the main character was treated badly by their parents when they were young. Later, when the parents encounter problems and seek help from their grown children, they find no help. Nevertheless, in this book, even though Annie and Buster are filled with confusion and anxiety during the process, they are still very concerned about their parents' safety. Although it’s expected since Fang’s couple are their biological parents, I still think that no matter who the person is, being able to set aside past grievances and help or care for someone who once treated you badly is truly generous and admirable.
While investigating the truth behind their parents' disappearance, Annie and Buster recalled many childhood traumas and dark memories. However, what stood out to me more was the mutual support between the siblings, which I think is a crucial part of this book. I believe that if the story had only one child instead of two, with no familial support after the parents went missing, the ending might have been that this child couldn’t overcome the trauma. Therefore, I believe the mutual support between the siblings is the reason they can continue with their lives, and it’s also the warmest part of the book for me. A phrase that came to my mind is, "Even though it's hard, we can face it together!"
