This is my second book”Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. The first chapter of Wonder is told from the perspective of the main character, August “Auggie” Pullman. He is a boy who is different from others, born with a facial deformity. He has undergone multiple surgeries since childhood, and his appearance is different from that of most people. As a result, his family has kept him home-schooled. However, at the beginning of the story, his parents think that it’s time to send him to a regular school, where he will start fifth grade. His mom also accompanies him on a visit to the school, meets the principal, and takes a tour with his future classmates.
The first chapter mainly introduces Auggie’s background and his self-description. I can tell from his description that he knows that he looks different and that people are often surprised or uncomfortable because of his appearance, but deep down, he is eager to be treated normally. His humor and intelligence also emerge in this chapter, giving me a basic understanding of his personality. This is the beginning of the story, setting the stage for the challenges and growth Auggie will experience at school.
