Log 1

Hi, I’m Kristin.

I'm an easygoing and friendly person. Back in the high school, I was quite outgoing and energetic. But after entering college, I became more quiet and started to enjoy spending time alone. In my free time, I like playing the guitar, singing, drawing, traveling, riding my motorcycle, and sometimes reading. However, I don’t consider myself a very good reader or writer.

The last time I finished a book was about two or three years ago. It was a science fiction novel called “The Invisible Library 3” by Genevieve Cogman. I first discovered this book series in junior high school, which was also when I read the most in my life. Back then, my school had a rule where we had to read for ten minutes every morning, and it had to be an actual book—not textbooks or study materials. I still remember when my teacher put a whole set of Harry Potter in the classroom bookshelf. I quickly borrowed the first book, and from the moment I started reading, I was obsessed with it. I became so fascinated with the magical world that I would grab the book as soon as the bell rang, and even secretly read it with a flashlight under the blanket at night (because my mom would scold me if I left the light on too late). I finished all nine books and watched all the movies within a month. That’s when I realized that science fiction was my favorite genre.

But after middle school, my reading habits began to decline. I even bought five books from The Invisible Library series, but I haven’t opened the latest one yet til now. I’ve noticed that when I keep up with reading, whether it's science fiction or other genres, my thoughts and emotions are more stable and positive. I can also express myself better. And if we don’t have enough input, it’s hard to analyze information or share ideas from different perspectives. Reading is also a great way to spend time alone. Unfortunately, because of my laziness, I’ve ignored the importance of reading in my life. Since starting college, I’ve been distracted by other entertainments and haven’t read as much.

In this class, I hope to redevelop my reading habits. Of course, my main goal is to complete the essays and projects successfully. As I mentioned earlier, I’m not great at expressing myself, so I want to work on improving my language skills by continuing to read and write more.

  1. I first read Harry Potter as an assisgment for school. Because I am older than you, not all the books were published yet. So, I had the novelty of being reading them while they were being published and the movies were being released.
I remember reading books even during class. In language class my teacher came to my desk one day and say: you really like to read. I was not paying attention to him, but he didn't scolded me. He just let me keep reading.
After high school I stopped reading too. I came back to after taking a class with professor Lee, to be honest. I was kind of mad with the world and I felt no interest in reading about others, specially if they are fictional characters.
Nowadays, I read more non-fiction books, but they are stories that still can captivate my interest.
I hope you can go back to enjoy reading and that can help you with the class (I'm kinda sure it will help).
